Production

ON THE RIVER began life as a piece of Reminiscence Theatre. Like all the Age Exchange shows, we use only words and songs as remembered by contributors. They visited our Reminiscence Centre in Blackheath, South East London, to attend rehearsals and demonstrate for the actors the skills and techniques they recalled from their working days.

The stories were compiled into a verbatim reminiscence theatre production in 1989, marking the centenary of the Dockers Tanner Strike. With backing from the trade union movement , the show toured nationally, playing especially to river communities in all the port cities.
